Supreme Court hears mail carrier's religious tolerance case

The Supreme Court is being asked to decide under what circumstances businesses must accommodate the needs of religious employees WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court is being asked to decide under what circumstances businesses must accommodate the needs of religious employees. A case before the justices Tuesday involves a Christian mail carrier in rural Pennsylvania. He was told that as part of his job he’d need to start delivering Amazon.com packages on Sundays. He declined, saying his Sundays are for church and family. U.S. Postal Service officials initially tried to get substitutes for the man’s shifts, but they couldn’t always. When he didn’t show, that meant more work for others. Ultimately, the man quit and sued for religious discrimination. The case is the latest religious confrontation the high court has been asked to referee. In recent years, the court’s 6-3 conservative majority has been particularly sensitive to the concerns of religious plaintiffs. That includes a ruling last ye...

N'Golo Kante stat sums up the current dysfunction at Chelsea

N’Golo Kante back on the pitch in the last two weeks has been a welcome sight for Chelsea fans after the Frenchman was forced to miss the best part of eight months with a hamstring injury. Kante has been the foundation on which much of Chelsea’s success since 2016 has been built on, winning the Premier League title in his debut season at Stamford Bridge and later adding the FA Cup, Europa League, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. His absence for most of this season has therefore been a huge blow for the Blues, who are potentially facing their lowest Premier League finish since 1996. Kante played his last Game prior to his lengthy layoff in August when Chelsea drew 2-2 against Tottenham. His first Game back was as a substitute in the defeat to Aston Villa at the beginning of April. The 32-year-old then captained Chelsea in their draw against Liverpool and again started this week’s Champions League defeat to Real Madrid. The curious thing about those four Game ...

Sadio Mane 'punched Leroy Sane in the face' after Man City defeat

Sadio Mane is reported to have hit Bayern Munich teammate Leroy Sane in the face during a furious dressing room row following Tuesday's 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Champions League . Sane started the Game against his former side, with Mane coming off the bench for the final 20 minutes, but neither could prevent Bayern from falling to a huge loss which sees them all but eliminated from the Champions League ahead of the second leg of their quarter-final tie. Late in the game, BILD state that Sane and Mane had a verbal disagreement on the pitch when a move broke down, and that dispute carried over into the dressing room after the final whistle. Mane is said to have taken issue with how Sane spoke to him on the pitch and the report even states that the former Liverpool man struck Sane in the face, leaving visible marks on the German's face. Teammates had to intervene to separate the duo, with Sane leaving the dressing room soon after to calm things down. Read the lates...

Florida fight over 'baby boxes' part of bigger culture war

A fight is developing in Florida's legislature over a measure that would allow fire stations and hospitals to install boxes where distressed mothers could leave their unwanted newborns FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Safe Haven Baby Boxes and A Safe Haven for Newborns are two charities with similar names and the same goal: providing distressed mothers with a safe place to surrender their unwanted newborns instead of dumping them in trash cans or along roadsides. But a fight between the two is brewing in the Florida Senate. An existing state law, supported and promoted by the Miami-based A Safe Haven, allows parents to surrender newborns to firefighters and hospital workers without giving their names. A new bill, supported by the Indiana-based Safe Haven Baby Boxes, would give fire stations and hospitals the option to install the group’s ventilated and climate-controlled boxes, where parents could drop off their babies without interacting with fire or hospital employees. The bill recently ...

English doctors' strike could be catastrophic, official says

Britain is bracing for a four-day walkout by tens of thousands of doctors at the state-funded health care system LONDON -- Britain is bracing for a four-day walkout by tens of thousands of doctors at the state-funded health care system that one official warned Monday could be “catastrophic” and postpone up to 350,000 appointments. The strike due to start Tuesday by National Health Service doctors early in their careers comes amid walkouts by public workers across many sectors demanding pay hikes during a cost-of-living crisis. A three-day doctors' strike last month crippled the system that has been trying to dig out of an appointment backlog that predates the pandemic and has led to longer waiting times to see a doctor. “These strike s are going to have a catastrophic impact on the capacity of the NHS to recover," Matthew Taylor, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, told Sky News. “The Health service has to meet high levels of demand at the same time as making inroads i...
