Mauricio Pochettino explains what went wrong for Chelsea in Bournemouth draw

Mauricio Pochettino has lamented Chelsea's struggles in front of goal following a 0-0 draw with Bournemouth on Sunday. For the second successive game the Blues failed to find the back of the net despite having 14 shots on goal and a 1.71 xG, and have managed just five goals in five Premier League games thus far this season - with three of said goals coming against newly-promoted Luton Town. Speaking to the club's official website after the bore draw, manager Pochettino pinpointed Chelsea's problems in front of goal as being central to their inability to win Game s: "I think again we need to complete the chances that we create. In the first 20 or 25 minutes we deserved to score but we did not score. "At the end the game was open, in the last 15 or 20 minutes I think we wanted to win, sometimes we started to disorganise our line because the full-back was so high, which gave Bournemouth the possibility to make some counter-attacks against us in some transitions. ...

Trabzonspor hoping to beat Besiktas to Nicolas Pepe signing

Turkish Super Lig clubs Besiktas and Trabzonspor are competing to sign Arsenal winger Nicolas Pepe, sources have confirmed to 90min . The Ivory Coast international was the most expensive signing in the Gunners' History until earlier this summer when Declan Rice made the £105m move from West Ham United, with Pepe joining in 2019 for £72m from Lille. However, Pepe fell out of favour at the Emirates Stadium during the 2021/22 season, making just 20 Premier League appearances that term. He spent the following year back in France on loan at Nice, scoring eight times in 28 matches. Pepe returned to Arsenal this summer but was not part of their pre-season preparations for the new campaign and has long had the club's blessing to look for a new club. 90min reported earlier this week that Besiktas were close to finalising a permanent move for Pepe, but they have been joined late in the race by Super Lig rivals Trabzonspor. Real Sociedad agree Kieran Tierney loan deal with Arsenal

Real Sociedad have reached agreement with Arsenal to sign defender Kieran Tierney on loan, 90min understands. The Basque-based club will feature in the Champions League after finishing fourth in La Liga last season - a fantastic reward for the continued progress made under manager Imanol Alguacil. Tierney has found himself on the periphery of Arsenal's side after initially struggling to command a place because of regular injuries, but even when fully fit, the Scotland international played second fiddle to Oleksandr Zinchenko last season. He has also seen Mikel Arteta add another option in versatile defender Jurrien Timber, though the Dutchman is set to miss an extended period of time because of an ACL tear. Nevertheless, Tierney is keen to play regular football and sources have confirmed to 90min that Real Sociedad have agreed a straight loan deal with Arsenal that will see the Spaniards cover his wages in full throughout the duration of his stay. There will be no buy option inc...

West Ham close to Mohammed Kudus agreement after third bid

West Ham United are nearing an agree ment with Ajax for the signing of Mohammed Kudus, 90min understands. The Hammers have already had two bids turned down by Ajax, the latest of which was worth €40m (£34m) plus add-ons. But the need for West Ham to sign quality attacking reinforcements has seen the club continue negotiations with Ajax, with manager David Moyes and technical director Tim Steidten both pushing for Kudus to make the move to London Stadium. Sources have confirmed to 90min that a third offer has been lodged with Ajax, who did agree a fee with Brighton & Hove Albion earlier this summer only for Kudus to put the brakes on a move, worth €41m initially plus €3m in add-ons (£35m + £2.5m). There's a belief that Ajax will accept the offer, having countered West Ham's last bid with a €50m proposal, with a key factor being the Conference League winners' willingness to adjust the payment terms of the deal. 90min understands that West Ham had initially been offer...

Harry Maguire's proposed West Ham transfer collapses

Harry Maguire's proposed transfer to West Ham United has collapsed, 90min understands. After telling Maguire he is free to leave Old Trafford this summer, Manchester United initially rejected a £30m bid from West Ham amid concerns over their ability to satisfy the centre-back's wage demands, only to eventually agree to the offer on the table. West Ham have since completed the signings of Edson Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse but talks over Maguire continued to drag on as they sought to thrash out a wage agreement with both the defender and United. 90min understands that Maguire had agreed the terms of a reduced contract with West Ham but sought a pay-off from United to compensate him for the loss in salary over the remaining two years of his deal at Old Trafford. Sources have now confirmed that no agreement was reached between Maguire and United, forcing West Ham to accept defeat in their pursuit of the centre-back. Man Utd 1-0 Wolves: Player ratings as Varane header seals scrappy win

Image
Manchester United started the 2023/24 Premier League win with a narrow 1-0 win over Wolves decided by a second half from Raphael Varane, against the run of play. Marcus Rashford forced an early save from Jose Sa after being played in by Antony to the right of centre, but his effort lack venom or conviction – the United striker barely otherwise touched the ball during the opening stages. The home side were dominating possession in those early exchanges, but neither they nor the west midlands visitors were doing enough to consistently test the other. The first real chance for Wolves came almost half an hour in, the result of Matheus Cunha breaking at speed and feeding Pablo Sarabia, whose effort took a slight deflection off wide of the far post. Cunha himself fizzed one not far off target not long after. United players screamed for a penalty shortly before half-time when Rashford’s close-range header struck the arm and body of Nelson Semedo, but a VAR check came and went without interv...

Arsenal summer signing suffers knee injury on Premier League debut

Arsenal were dealt a blow during their Premier League season opener against Nottingham Forest on Saturday when summer signing Jurrien Timber had to be hauled off through injury . The Netherlands defender joined from Ajax earlier this summer and made a good early impression for the Gunners throughout pre-season and in their Community Shield triumph against Manchester City last week. Timber started at left-back in Saturday's lunchtime kick-off against Nottingham Forest at the Emirates Stadium and was playing well as Arsenal cruised into a two-goal lead - Eddie Nketiah's deflected strike broke the deadlock before Bukayo Saka added a second with a stunner from 25 yards. However, Timber was injured in first-half stoppage time in the act of trying to tackle Brennan Johnson, with the Welshman falling awkwardly onto Timber's knee. He received treatment from physios as the half came to a close and was able to come out for the second half. However, just minutes after the restar...

Tottenham 2023/24 pre-season - winners & losers

Image
Tottenham Hotspur are entering the new Premier League season as one of the division's most intriguing sides. They were expected to comfortably finish in the top four last season under Antonio Conte, but a series of implosions saw Spurs drop to eighth - their worst return since 2008/09. Ange Postecoglou has been tasked with turning Tottenham back into a competitive and entertaining side, and the early signs this summer have been promising. Though a friendly with Leicester City was called off due to poor weather and Roma were replaced as opponents by Singapore's Lion City Sailors, there have been plenty of positives to balance out the negatives of a disrupted pre- season . Here are Spurs' winner s and losers from the summer so far.
